Yes, in most cases you do need a water filter. To secure your oven, you need to live up to the requirements for water supply and water quality, which are specified in the installation manual. The water coming in to the oven must have a maximum water hardness of 3 dH and chloride maximum of 100 mg/L.
You can contact your local water supplier, since they often have data concerning the water hardness. Alternatively, you can use the HOUNÖ PROTECT Test Strips as a cheap and simple way to determine the water hardness in intervals.
Yes, you can use the HOUNÖ PROTECT drop test, if you want to measure the precise water hardness. We recommend you measure the precise water hardness, because in this way you can use the filter capacity more effectively and accurately – thus extending the life of your water filter.
Quite simply, one can say that the larger the filter, the more capacity it has. But there are also other things you need to take into account, to get the best and longest life out of your water filter. You need to ask yourself the questions; how much water I use and what is water hardness?
The water consumption depends on how you use your oven. If you are cooking a lot of food in the oven, the water consumption is higher. On average, an oven uses 600-1800 L of water per month - but you can easily spend more or less.
You can use this table of HOUNÖ PROTECT water filters, to see what size water filter that fits your needs:

The Hydro Shield water is a four-step water treatment cartridge:
Organic particles is normally treated with a 50 my self-flushing filter, so the Hydro Shield will remove it.
If there are high amounts of humus in the water, the cartridge might become blocked earlier than end of lifetime. In that case, it will be beneficial for you to fit a dedicated self-flushing filter before the Hydro Shield.
If you have a SmartTouch oven, your oven is equipped with a water monitoring software. Is your oven is older than December 2015, you need to update your software to version 1.3.0 or higher to get access to the water monitoring software.
If you have an oven with a manual control panel, you must buy an aquameter to measure your water consumption. You must connect the aquameter and set the capacity as described in the table at the back of the filter manual.
Updating the oven software must be done by a trained technician. Please contact your local HOUNÖ service specialist to have your oven updated to the newest software.
If you have a SmartTouch oven with updated software, the oven gives you a clear alarm when the filter needs replacing.
If you have an oven with manual control panel, you must keep an eye on the aquameter and change the filter when it is exhausted.
It is the actual water hardness that must be entered in water measurement software. Hydro Shield ensures that the water supplied to the oven is within the allowed values for water hardness and chloride.
Please see the oven installation manual for the exact requirements. You can also find the manuals on www.houno.com.
Hydro Shield is designed to protect against the harmful deposits in the water that can do damage to HOUNÖ combi ovens. If you are using other water filters, you are not equally protected against these harmful deposits, and you risk deterioration of the oven.
You can install the mounting kit, if you are familiar with the installation of gaskets and correct tensioning. The filter mounting kit with hoses must be connected to the water supply, and if there is a tap, you can mount the hoses.
Yes, you can change the filter yourself. All you have to is to follow the guide in the filter manual. Be aware that the Hydro Shield filter head shut off the water when you remove the filter.
No, you must have a separate filter for each oven. If two ovens are build together, you must install two water filters. If you have two ovens attached to the same filter and both ovens draws water at the same time, the common water filter will limit the water flow.
The correct hoses come with a new oven. Alternatively, you can buy the hoses here. The hoses come equipped with a cap and suction tube, which suits HOUNÖ PROTECT.
The installation manual describes how the hoses should be connected to the oven. The red hose should be connected to the detergent (Detergent and Detergent Intense have red labels) and the blue hose should be connected to the rinse aid (Rinse Aid has a blue label).
Yes, once the hoses are installed on the oven, it is easy to replace the chemicals. But you have to be vareful and follow the instructions on the packaging.
HOUNÖ PROTECT Detergent Intense is produced without EDTA, and is developed to be an effective cleaning product.
No, each oven must have its own set of chemicals. It is because the software on the SmartTouch ovens would not otherwise be able to calculate the remaining amount of detergent and rinse aid.
